Cheap Cheats: Scallop Hem Lace Shorts

I haven't been posting Cheap Cheats for a little while because I became conflicted. After all, many of my Cheap alternatives came from fast fashion venues like Forever 21, which I try to abstain from because of the horrendous factory conditions and poor worker treatment. Not to mention the lacking customer service and bad return policy. I've decided to continue Cheap Cheats, but I'm going to try to source similar pieces which are made a little more sustainably or consciously. It'll be difficult, especially in today's world of global outsourcing, but I'll try my best. If I unknowingly post an item from an unsustainable/downright terrible place, you guys can tell me and I'll learn from my mistakes! Okay? Okay.

Without further ado, here's this week's Cheap Cheats: scallop hem lace shorts.

Recently, I was in the market for a very cute birthday gift for my very good friend Jodi. Recalling that a cute white skirt was on her wishlist--and knowing that her taste in fashion is often sweet and feminine--I set out to find her something that fit the bill. I had been eyeing a pair of lacy Free People shorts (okay, maybe for myself), but they were obviously a little out of my price range for a birthday gift.

However, I had a strong inkling that Jodi would enjoy that style, even in lieu of a skirt. So, it was with great relief that when out shopping for her gift, after hemming and hawing over not-quite-as-cute white skirts, I fortuitously came across a very similar pair:

And voila! I grabbed a striped apricot shirt from GAP to pair with it and my present was complete. Jodi was happy and predictably loved them, and I was happy that I saved $40. Also, I found a crochet pair in ivory for myself. So everyone was happy, really.

Modcloth Madness

Something insidious implored me to do it; I had no idea why. My fingers of their own volition began to carefully type the address into the search bar.
Do you really want to do this? My rational mind implored urgently.
"Yes," I replied quietly. "I've got to. It's the only way... to get my fill of whimsical Peter Pan collars, feminine skirts, and cute dresses."
You might not be able to control yourself, my mind warned me. Remember last time--
"I'm stronger than I was back then." The site began to load, the colored beach ball accompanying my Mac's pointer spinning like some ominous cosmic pinwheel.
Just remember... I warned you. When all is said and done, when you're sobbing in a corner, regretting it all... Just remember...
But it was too late. The site had loaded, and with that one last warning still echoing heedlessly in my ears, I was once again hopelessly entangled in the adorable fashion frenzy that is Modcloth. Below, I will chronicle the daunting struggles of my thought process whilst informing you all of many awesome pieces and trying not to give in to their siren cries.

I love my black Cambridge Satchel, and I love the color mint.
'Nuff said.

Burgundy and velvet and a Peter Pan collar, oh my! I kind of need this for fall/winter.

Bass Weejuns? Yes. In Burgundy? Double yes.

Counter Culture Sunglasses-originally $39.99, now $11.99

Can't forget a psychedelic pair of sunnies on those days when the sun's still shining (hello, California falls/winters).

Midtown Meet-Up Top-originally $24.99, now $16.99

Leather and faux leather are always perennial favorites come fall and winter. Take the trend for a casual, fun spin with this crop top, which is a summer trend that for now seems to have some staying power.

Need I Sway More? Skirt-originally $79.99, now $55.99

I simply adore skirts with tulle, or lace, or tulle and lace; I just don't have many because I don't know when I would wear them. This one could be boho or more sophisticated/vintage-y, depending on the styling, and could even be a maxi skirt on a shorter gal. I mean, I'm just saying I could totally appreciate its versatility.

I love the crocheted lace on this raglan sweater! It seems to combine the more tomboy silhouette of a baseball raglan with artsy, delicate femininity, creating a perfectly quirky sweater.

See above explanation on "skirts with tulle".

Ugh, Peter Pan collars. My current vice. And the rich cranberry color would layer nicely under warm cream sweaters for fall...

Siren cries, I say. Siren cries. Dare I resist them...? Only time may tell.

Cruel Summer

The weather around here hasn't gotten the memo that it's almost summer. Today it was windy, overcast, and rather chilly (which makes sense, considering the aforementioned wind). I'd say it's cruel of nature, a crying shame, but then I wouldn't get to wear cozy outfits like this one. ^_^

Color corrected to fix the light. Believe me, it didn't look this vibrant out.

Right between the taking of this picture and the following one, my neighbors drove by and slowed as they passed. My friend's nana stared out the window at me, somewhat bewildered.
I surmise that I may or may not have been a topic of dinner conversation, if they had nothing better to talk about.

Me feeling slightly abashed.

To Grandmother's House We Go

Sorry for the lack of posting recently. I've had to commence the struggle against college apps, which is quite an unfortunate load to tackle. Not to mention that old jealous standby, homework...
Anyway, here's a bunch of pictures we took at our Grandma Lila's house. She has some pretty darn awesome vintage stuff since she's a major packrat.
Vintage thermoses.

Creepy creeper.

You can't really tell, but I'm wearing this rad vintage Calvin Klein denim overall dress.

UPDATE: It looks exactly like this:
